Mid South Refinery and Smelters Inc.

Love this old refiner out out of Brandon, MS. Very unique hallmark of a Magnolia flower, which is the state flower of Mississippi. These came predominately in 5 and 10 oz class bars. They are very high premium and scarce today. Here are a few from my collection.

Such a great 10 oz example with patina.
Killer character and lines on the reverse.
Chunky 5 oz odd weight pour.
Nice patina on reverse.

  1. Hello, I’m hoping that you or someone that frequents this site might be able to give me some information concerning a 100 oz bar of silver bullion that I have from Mid South Smelters. I purchased it about 1984. It has the magnolia flower stamped on it. Does it have any value as a collectible or is worth only whatever silver is going for? What might be the best way to sell it if I chose to do so? Thanks for any help you can give me.

    1. Hi Fred,

It would certainly command a premium, assuming the condition of the bar and hallmark are strong. Premiums on 100 oz pieces generally are not nearly as high as premiums on smaller 5 to 10 oz and even 25 oz pieces. With that said, there is still a premium and there are small contingent of vintage collectors who love the big boy bars. I’d love to see a pic if you can send through the blog to the email in the contact section of the blog. Thanks for the comment.

  2. Hello! I am reaching out to inquire about any information or resources you may have on the history of this company. I work for a locally owned antique and consignment shop dealing in the trade of gold and silver coins and bullion. Our shop is located where the original Mid South Refiner and Smelters head office was during their operation. I am just interested in learning more information about the operation and history.

    Kindly,

    1. Hi Kaitlynn, what a small world. That is really interesting that your business is in the same location. Information on this old refiner is very scarce. If I come up with new information, I’m happy to share with you. Just knowing names and locations, estimated dates of business is sometimes all we can come up with.
